Crib Mobiles

Crib mobiles are about as diverse as are children, well at least as diverse as every culture!   There are all kinds of shapes and sizes, large and small, quiet and musical, sweet and not so sweet like dinosaurs.

I have read that by placing objects that the baby will study and look at is great for their developement.  Well I do not know, I believe from pictures of me while a baby it looked like what my crib mobiles were made of, were a bunch of puffy animals.  Looks like there was a puffy giraffe, lion, bear and a zebra.  Who knows maybe that influenced me to  love the great outdoors.  So do you want an astronaut?  Or a fireman?  Time to get started!

Seriously, from a learning perspective, it is thought it is best to place before your babies eyes a colorful, lifelike mobile if you are going to place one in their crib.  Crib mobiles that can start your child down the road to learning is a good idea.  But do not go overboard, and remember, it is the baby who will be looking at it not you nor other visitors.  So  simple colorful crib mobiles that are more flat, for the view of the baby is a better choice than the more popular models which are beautiful for you and I to look at while standing alongside of the crib.

Things to look for in crib mobiles

First you may want to consider what is the budgeted amount  Keep in mind that crib mobiles will only be used for about 6 months.  I will cover this later.  For now get a dollar amount in mind.  You can spend anywhere from a few as $22 to well over a $100.00 dollars.  And if the sky is the limit and you really want to emphasize diamonds are a girl’s best friend at this young age, go for it and get out he pocketbook. Yes you really can get crib mobiles that way!

More Things to look for

How much movement do you want?  The more moving
parts the more costly and the more mechanical things that can go wrong.  If you leave expensive crib mobiles in with little Johnny long enough, against manufacturers recommendations of course, he may just learn quickly enough how to dissemble it permanently if you know what I mean.

I am speaking from loving experience having raised four beautiful bibles.  Believe me, these little people can become curious precious little monsters when they want to, or should I say are allowed to be.

Anyway more options

Battery operated or wound tight.  Well the wind up models have the ability to wind the parent tight when the crib mobiles stop just when the baby is dozing off and the music stopping is just enough to wake the child back up.  Now we have a wound tight parent who has to walk back into the room to wind up one of these winding crib mobiles and the chances are, with that intelligent little person laying in that crib, that they will have figured out in a rather short order, that now you have become a part of that crib mobiles unit if you know what I mean.

My suggestion, get a battery operated unit.  It will be worth a few extra dollars.  Oh yes and I said the music stopped.  Well, there is little reason to have a crib mobiles unit without music unless there are medical reasons to not have one as they are the best for soothing and entertaining a baby it seems.

So we have some guidelines here.  I have loved every one of
the children’s  crib mobiles we have had and I always love to see what other people have as well.  There are a number of great examples on this page.  The options are wide open.

I left the best option for last.  Bells and whistles

Remote control!  OMG.  Are these nice.  You can turn on or off, and program the time to run with these devices without disturbing the baby by having to walk into the room.  What will they think of next.  Digital baby sitters?  Really, this feature is awesome. They were not around when we had babies of our own but when the grandkids start showing up there is going to be one of these units in our home for when they come visiting.

One other thought, at around 5  or 6 months, or when your baby becomes more mobile in its crib, it is time to remove the crib mobiles for the child’s safety.  Just follow the instructions given by the manufacturer.

So for the safety of your child, remove the crib mobiles when they are getting to the point of being able to get their curious little wonderful hands on them.  For their safety.
