Portable Crib

As a parent who did a lot of traveling when our four children were little I am here to give you some key points to consider when looking for a portable crib.

I am going to start off with the simplest reasons to buy a portable crib.

  1. Easy to put up and to take down
  2. Must be sturdy enough to withstand collapsing when a child pushes against the wall
  3.     jumps up and down in the portable crib
  4.     walks to one end of the portable crib
  5.     leans out of a crib
  6. Weight is a consideration but I would not buy the lightest portable crib as some are so flimsy that they hardly make a few trips let alone the wrath of a ticked off toddler.
  7. Make sure the legs are sturdy to withstand all of the # 3 above
  8. This is a quirk of mine.  On many portable cribs the sides are solid.  Not only does this make it difficult to transport but also since you are traveling sometimes you do not have direct control of the room temperature as you would at your home.  If it is hot in a room, portable cribs that have solid sides make the bed for your child all that much warmer.  Remember, chances are if you are hot, your child is hotter, with a diaper on and all.  Few people sleep well when they are hot.
  9. Forget the cheep models and only go for the portable crib models that meet the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 Eco certified or never settle for one that has not met at least the ASTM F406-7 American Standard.  Period.
  10. It just has t ofeel right, like you babay will be safe, trust your gut on this one

Yes you may have to spend a little time first cruising the net to find some reviews about cribs before you go out and physically see one.  I did find one model that is great for traveling and much more.  It’s down the page a bit.  When you find one you like if you are allowed to in the store put it up and take it down.  If you cannot do it easily forget it.   After traveling the last thing you will want to be doing is fighting with a portable crib.

When traveling make plans for the unexpected.  I do not mean to say pack the kitchen sink but keep in mind things that you may need in order to have a safe and fun trip.

We learned the hard way over the years that yes, there are grocery stores wherever we have traveled with our children and other stores too.  So if we forgot something it was just as easy to go and get some provision if needed once we arrived at our destination.  If one is traveling by air any more with all of the fees for luggage, we pack light and buy some necessities once we arrive at our destination. It’s just easier.

The best one we have found is heart

One name that is worth checking into is the Baby Bjorn travel crib.  This one meets the  OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class 1 Eco certified criteria as well as the ASTM F406-7 American Standard.  With a claim of being able to put it ups in 30 seconds and take down in 60 this is one great portable crib.  Comes with a traveling packing kit and its light.  This one meets all of the above criteria.  The only thing about it is that it may be a little hard on Mom or dads back as it si low to the ground.  But if you  do not have back problems this is a great tool for traveling with a portable crib that is safe and easy to work with.
